Bandits have again stormed Government Day Secondary school, Kaya, in Maradun local government area of Zamfara State and kidnapped at least 73 students alongside some teachers.

A resident who pleaded for anonymity said the bandits stormed the school premises around 11:00 am on Wednesday when school was in progress.

“As soon they entered the school they began to shoot indiscriminately and kidnapped students and dozens of teachers on the spot.

“As I am talking to you now, we can not ascertain how many students both male and female and their teachers were kidnapped during the attack but we saw over 100 students including some of their teachers were chased by the Bandits to an unknown destination,” he said.

In a statement on Wednesday evening, Mohammed Shehu, the Police Public Relations Officer in Zamfara, said security has been beefed up in the community where the incident occurred.

“The Zamfara state police command wishes to confirm the abduction of 73 students of Government Day Secondary school, Kaya in Maradun LGA.”

“The abduction followed the invasion of the school by large number of armed bandits that occurred today at exactly 1122hrs,” the statement reads.

“The command under the leadership of CP Ayuba N Elkanah has deployed search and rescue team that was mandated to work in synergy with the military to ensure the safe rescue of the abducted students.

“Security has also been been beefed up at Kaya Village and environs to forestall further attack on the communities.

“Further development will be made known to members of the public,” he said.

The attack happened a day after Governor Bello Matawalle ordered the closure of some markets and roads.

He had also directed filling stations to limit the amount of fuel sold to vehicles.

Findings gathered that while this was happening a prayer session on the current insecurity challenges facing the state is being held at the Emir of Gusau’s palace with the governor, Bello Matawalle in attendance.
